Previewing changes with a dry run

General Beginner Last updated: October 6, 2026

A dry run shows what a fix would change and saves nothing.

What You’ll Learn

  • Previewing a whole finding
  • Previewing one post
  • Reading the change
  • Dry run in WP-CLI

Previewing a Whole Finding

Choose what should happen to the shortcode or block, then choose Preview the Changes. The first posts are shown with their change, and Show more posts loads the next ones. The button that fixes the whole finding works once you have seen the changes, and stops working again if you pick a different fix.

Previewing One Post

Choose Preview on a row of the table of posts. The change opens under the row, and choosing Preview again closes it.

Reading the Change

The current text is on the left and the text after the fix is on the right, with a line of context around each change. The words that go away are marked on the left and the words that are added are marked on the right. A post that cannot be fixed automatically says so instead of showing a change.

Dry Run in WP-CLI

Add –dry-run to wp bsfx fix to see how many posts would change, and –diff to print the change of each post, without saving anything.
