Not all content lives in posts and pages. Stores, portfolios, and directories keep their pages in custom post types, and their links often sit in custom fields. This guide shows how to scan them and fix what is found.
What You’ll Learn
- How to choose which post types are scanned
- What is left out
- How Fix Custom Fields works
- What is never touched
Choosing Post Types
Go to Options and tick the types under Post Types. Posts and pages are used when none is ticked. Every published post of the types you tick is read, including products and portfolio items. Password-protected posts are always left out.
Where Links Hide
A link can be in the content of a post, or in a custom field that your theme prints on the page, such as an address field, an HTML field, or a field with a list inside, like an ACF repeater. The scan finds both, because it reads the finished page.
Fix Custom Fields
With Fix Custom Fields set to Yes in Options, Edit URL, Change the URL, and Unlink also look in the custom fields of the post that holds the link. They handle plain values, HTML, and values that contain a list. If the address is in the content and in a field, both are changed.
The plugin never changes fields whose name starts with an underscore (the private fields of WordPress and plugins), and it never changes the data of page builders. For Elementor pages, use Search & Replace for Elementor.
Make a backup first, as with every change to your content.
When a Link Is Skipped
If a link is in a theme file, a menu, a widget, or a field the plugin may not touch, the result says so. See Why can’t I change a link from the results table? for where to fix each one.
This feature is available in Broken Link Fixer Pro.
