Block Editor External Links doesn’t ask you to maintain a list of links by hand – it learns from what you’ve already linked to, then offers those URLs back to you the next time you start typing one. This guide covers where autocomplete appears, how a link gets into the list in the first place, and why suggestions sometimes take a moment to show up.
What You’ll Learn
- Where to type to trigger autocomplete, and where it won’t appear
- How a link becomes a suggestion in the first place
- Why suggestions rank in the order they do
- Why there’s a short delay before suggestions appear
Where Autocomplete Appears
- Select some text in a Block Editor paragraph (or any text block).
- Open the link tool – either the link icon in the block toolbar, or the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmd+K while text is selected.
- Start typing
http://,https://, orwww.in the URL field. - Matching links from your saved list appear in a dropdown below the field.
The same thing works in the Classic Editor’s “Insert/edit link” dialog, including the TinyMCE editor body – you don’t need the Block Editor to use it.
Why Ctrl/Cmd+K Sometimes Does Something Else
WordPress uses Ctrl/Cmd+K for two different things, and only one of them is the link tool. With text selected in a block, Ctrl/Cmd+K opens that block’s link popover, and autocomplete works there. With nothing selected, the same shortcut opens WordPress’s global command palette instead – a totally different tool for jumping between admin screens – and autocomplete has no effect there. If you press Ctrl/Cmd+K and don’t see link suggestions, check whether you actually have text selected first.
How a Link Ends Up in Your Suggestions
By default, the plugin scans your published posts and pages once a day and pulls out every external link it finds – anything pointing to a different domain than your own site. You don’t have to do anything for this to happen; it runs quietly in the background on the schedule you choose in Settings.
If you’d rather manage the list yourself instead of scanning content, switch to Manual mode and paste in your own URLs – see Automatic vs. Manual link management mode.
Why Suggestions Rank in a Particular Order
Every time a link is found again during extraction, its usage count goes up. Suggestions that match what you’re typing are ranked by that usage count, so the links you actually cite most often surface first – not just whatever was added most recently.
Why Suggestions Take a Moment to Appear
Once you start typing a URL, the plugin searches your saved links over the REST API rather than filtering a list that was already loaded into the page. That’s a deliberate trade-off – it means the search stays fast even on a site with thousands of stored links – but it does mean there’s a brief pause, usually well under a second, between typing and seeing results. If nothing appears at all after a few seconds, double-check that at least one extraction has run – a brand new install has no links to suggest yet.
Autocomplete in both the Block Editor and Classic Editor is available in Block Editor External Links Free and Block Editor External Links Pro.
