The free version’s jurisdiction warnings – Gambling and Age Restricted – show to every visitor once a post is flagged, regardless of where they’re browsing from. That’s fine for a warning that genuinely applies everywhere, but plenty of jurisdiction requirements are exactly that: jurisdictional. Compliance Copilot Pro lets you restrict a warning to only the countries where it’s actually required.
What You’ll Learn
- Where the Restricted Countries field lives and how to set it
- How country codes are matched against your visitors
- What happens when a visitor’s country can’t be determined
- A gap to know about when creating a brand-new warning term
Setting Restricted Countries on a Warning
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Compliance Copilot > Jurisdictions.
- Click Edit under the warning you want to restrict – “Gambling” and “Age Restricted” are both included by default.
- Find the Restricted Countries field further down the edit screen.
- Enter a comma-separated list of two-letter ISO country codes, for example
US,GB,AU. - Click Update.
Leave the field blank to show the warning to every visitor regardless of country – the same behavior as the free version. This is the default for both built-in terms until you set something.
How Country Matching Works
Once a country list is set, the warning only renders for visitors whose detected country is in that list. Detection uses your local MaxMind GeoLite2 database if you’ve set one up (see Setting up MaxMind GeoLite2 for real country detection), falling back to a CDN-provided country header if not.
If a visitor’s country can’t be determined at all – no database, no CDN header, nothing to go on – the warning shows anyway rather than being silently hidden. The logic fails open on purpose: showing a warning to someone who didn’t strictly need it is a much smaller problem than hiding one from someone who did.
A Gap With Brand-New Warning Terms
The Restricted Countries field only appears on a warning term’s edit screen, not on the “Add New Warning” form. If you create a custom warning term beyond the two built-in ones, save it first, then open it again to edit – the Restricted Countries field will be there on the second pass.
